PINK NEWS- Protests in Support of Italian Non-Bio Mothers who have been removed from their children's birth certificates
We have long been supporting and campaigning for Italian LGBTQ+ families who were threatened by the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni the beginning of the year that she would fight back against the ‘LGBT lobby’ that is our community, and in July she followed through.
She removed the Non-Biological Mother in same sex couple relationships from the birth certificate of their children retroactively. That has impacted 27 families and 33 children so far.
At LGBT Mummies we have been campaigning for this to be revoked, raising awareness and amplifying the issue globally across socials and through our contacts across the media to ensure that we collectively come together as a community and Allies to stop this, whilst supporting some of the 27 families who have been impacted.
We have come together as a collective of organisations and individuals with the likes of Stonewall, etc community, From GaytoZe and other individuals such as Chiara Luxedo (an italian mother in the UK) and held a London protest outside the Italian Embassy this week. Other Protests have also followed in Lyon,Berlin,Mexico,Dublin, and also last night at the Vatican itself- and there are more that we are planning with the support of our global community.
Our Founder was interviewed by Pink News, BBC and the Daily Mail to highlight the issue and the impact it is having on those families, future families in Italy and also the potential threat of if this happened globally in other countries.
As she said,
“Meloni & her right wing Government retroactively removing Non-Biological Mothers from their children’s Birth certificates is wholly discriminatory, an abhorrent attack on our families and moreover, a human rights violation. The impact to those Mothers, their children & the future families in our Lgbtq+ community is immeasurable. This is something no Government globally have ever done before, & she is only focussing on the further exclusion & erasure of our families, rather than the impact on them. What she also fails to recognize is that these Mothers are tax payers, they support the Italian economy, as will their children in the future.”
It’s a step towards the genocide of our community & collectively we must come together-stronger together to ensure we fight for equity & equality as LGBTQ+ families in society.”
We are working towards the next steps in campaigning for this to be revoked, and have already issued a letter urgently requested the ECCHR (European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights) that we, other organisations and our community have signed, asking them to step in and take action.
ELC have provided a letter that people are signing and posting to their local Italian Embassy’s, and we have other Protests planned that people in our community are stepping forward to hold.
